Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
The gold standard for diagnosing hypertension and assessing the effectiveness of blood pressure medication is a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring system. Hypertension is often overdiagnosed due to abnormal readings during doctor visits (white coat hypertension) or underdiagnosed when blood pressure is elevated at work or during sleep (masked hypertension).
A 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor measures your blood pressure every 15-20 minutes during waking hours and every hour during sleep. This provides an accurate assessment of your blood pressure, enabling your physician to develop an effective treatment plan with minimal interventions.
The Process:
You will receive instructions and have the blood pressure monitor placed at the first visit. You will then return 24 hours later, at which time the monitor will be removed and results recorded and presented to you. These results can then be brought to your cardiologist or PCP for evaluation and treatment.
The monitor is easily removed and replaced for ANY activities involving exposure to water or vigorous exercise.
